1. Analysis

Tape Evaluation

Once your reels arrive, we catalog your project, applying identifying labels to each tape and box, and perform a thorough visual inspection to determine:

  • The best restoration path to returning your tape to safe playable condition
  • We gather as much metadata as possible in included documentation to determine the most efficient workflow for your project
  • Assess the tape for at-risk factors that may require special handling, such as the presence mold that will require deep cleaning or the possibility of lubricant destabilization that may require a deep clean and sectional transfer
  • We assess for Sticky Shed Syndrome and the need for heat treatment.

If baking or deep cleaning is required, we plan it out before attempting playback—protecting both your tapes and our gear.

2. Restoration

Tape Baking & Restoration

For reels showing signs of sticky shed, we use either our Fisher Scientific Incubator or our Grieve oven to “bake” them at a precisely controlled temperature. This corrects binder issues long enough for a safe transfer—without compromising sound quality.

Deep Cleaning & Rescue

If your tapes have been exposed to mold, debris, or flood damage, our specialized cleaning machines remove contaminants, ensuring the reels are safe to handle and capable of accurate playback.” If your reels have adhesion syndrome or are suffering from lubricant destabilization we will contact you to discuss the best way forward.

Splice Repair & Prep

We repair damaged or aging splices, remove any sticky residue, and give each reel a library wind—making sure it’s properly tensioned and ready for the next step.

3. Transfer

Machine Alignment & Calibration

Every reel is played back on fully restored Ampex MM1200s, customized 440Cs, or other format-specific decks. We align the machines with proper playback EQ and tune any necessary noise reduction to the specifications of your recording, capturing the truest possible signal.

High-Resolution Capture

We create Broadcast WAV files at the sample rate of your choice (44.1–192 kHz). Each track on the tape becomes its own WAV file, ensuring total compatibility with popular DAWs like Pro Tools, Logic, and Cubase.

Noise Reduction & Format Conversion

  • Dolby (A, SR, B, C, S) and dbx decoding racks bypass aging consumer-grade circuits for improved clarity and bass response.
  • We support rare formats—like 1″ 10-track or ¼″ 8-track—making virtually any open reel analog tape within rescue.

4. Delivery

Digital File Delivery

We typically provide a password-protected download link so you can easily access your high-resolution files. For larger projects, you may prefer:

  • Shipping an external hard drive with the transferred content.

Tape Return

Unless otherwise requested, we keep your tapes on-site until you confirm that the transfers meet your satisfaction. Then, we pack and return them via UPS or another reliable carrier—wound properly for long-term storage.
